The Golden Throw

Chopra’s javelin sliced through the warm Wednesday evening air at the Kalinga Stadium, marking his return to competitive action on Indian turf after a three-year hiatus with a remarkable victory. His best mark of 82.27m in his fourth attempt claimed the victory.

The Competitors

Chopra overtook the initial leader, DP Manu of Karnataka, who took silver with an 82.06m effort. Uttam Balasaheb Patil bagged the bronze with a 78.39m effort. Asian Games silver medallist Kishore Jena, who has secured a Paris 2024 Olympic quota for India in men’s javelin throw alongside Chopra, finished fifth with a 75.49m throw.

The Journey

The 26-year-old Neeraj was participating in an event in India for the first time since becoming the Olympic champion three years ago. The last time Neeraj competed in India was at the Federation Cup in March 2021, where he won the gold medal with a throw of 87.80m.

The Future

Chopra is now looking forward to competing again in Czechia in another 10-12 days. He aims to continue his good form and is hopeful of breaking his national record (currently 89.94m), and also aims to breach the 90m mark.
