Eligibility for WB Sub-Inspector Recruitment
Indian Citizen
The candidate must be an Indian citizen.
Age
Candidates must be between 20 and 30 years old as of January 1, 2024. There is a 5-year age relaxation for candidates belonging to SC and ST categories, and a 3-year relaxation for candidates belonging to OBC-A, OBC-B, and Transgender categories. The age will be calculated based on the date of birth mentioned in the admit card of the Secondary or equivalent examination.
For departmental candidates, the maximum age limit is 35 years, with the same relaxations applicable for reserved categories.
Educational Qualification
Candidates must have a Bachelor’s degree from any recognized university or equivalent institution.
Knowledge of Language
All candidates must be able to speak, read, and write in the Bengali language. (Not applicable for candidates from the hill subdivisions of Darjeeling and Kalimpong.)
Physical Measurement Test / PMT for candidates
Male:
Sub Inspector Post (Unarmed Branch) for all candidates (except Gorkhas, Rajbanshis, Garwalis, and ST): Height 167 cm, Chest 79 cm (with an expansion capacity of 5 cm), Weight 56 kg.
For candidates of Gorkhas, Rajbanshis, Garwalis, and ST in the Unarmed Branch: Height 160 cm, Chest 76 cm (with an expansion capacity of 5 cm), Weight 52 kg.
Sub Inspector Post (Armed Branch) for all candidates (except Gorkhas, Rajbanshis, Garwalis, and ST): Height 173 cm, Chest 86 cm (with an expansion capacity of 5 cm), Weight 60 kg.
For candidates of Gorkhas, Rajbanshis, Garwalis, and ST in the Armed Branch: Height 163 cm, Chest 81 cm (with an expansion capacity of 5 cm), Weight 54 kg.
Female:
Only candidates can apply for the Sub Inspector (Unarmed Branch). For all types of candidates (except for Gorkhas, Rajbanshis, Garwalis, and ST), the height should be 160 cm, and the weight should be 48 kg.
For female candidates of Gorkha, Rajbanshi, Garwali, and ST for the Unarmed Branch, the height should be 155 cm, and the weight should be 45 kg.
Transgender:
For the Sub Inspector position (Unarmed Branch):
- For all candidates except Gorkhas, Rajbanshis, Garwalis, and ST: Height should be 162 cm, and weight should be 51 kg.
- For Gorkhas, Rajbanshis, Garwalis, and ST candidates: Height should be 157 cm, and weight should be 47 kg.
For the Sub Inspector position (Armed Branch):
- For all candidates except Gorkhas, Rajbanshis, Garwalis, and ST: Height should be 166 cm, and weight should be 54 kg.
- For Gorkhas, Rajbanshis, Garwalis, and ST candidates: Height should be 160 cm, and weight should be 50 kg.
Physical Efficiency Test / PET
For males applying to the Unarmed Branch/Armed Branch, the requirement is to run 800 meters in 3 minutes.
For females applying to the Unarmed Branch, the requirement is to run 400 meters in 2 minutes.
For transgender candidates applying to either the Unarmed Branch or Armed Branch, the requirement is to run 400 meters in 1 minute and 40 seconds.
Total Number of Vacancies for WB Sub-Inspector Recruitment
- Unreserved (UR): For the Unarmed Branch, there are 254 vacancies for males and 112 for females. Additionally, for the Armed Branch, there are 144 vacancies exclusively for males. Combining both branches, there are a total of 510 vacancies for UR candidates.
- Economically Weaker Section (EWS): In the Unarmed Branch, there are 56 vacancies for males and 25 for females. Moreover, for the Armed Branch, there are 32 vacancies exclusively for males. Together, there are a total of 113 vacancies for EWS candidates across both branches.
- Schedule Caste (SC): In the Unarmed Branch, there are 124 vacancies for males and 54 for females. Furthermore, for the Armed Branch, there are 70 vacancies exclusively for males. Combining both branches, there are a total of 248 vacancies for SC candidates.
- Schedule Tribes (ST): For the Unarmed Branch, there are 34 vacancies for males and 15 for females. Additionally, for the Armed Branch, there are 19 vacancies exclusively for males. Altogether, there are 68 vacancies for ST candidates across both branches.
- OBC – A: In the Unarmed Branch, there are 56 vacancies for males and 25 for females. Additionally, for the Armed Branch, there are 32 vacancies exclusively for males. Combined across both branches, there are a total of 113 vacancies for OBC – A candidates.
- OBC – B: For the Unarmed Branch, there are 40 vacancies for males and 17 for females. Moreover, for the Armed Branch, there are 22 vacancies exclusively for males. In total, there are 79 vacancies for OBC – B candidates across both branches.
That means there are 564 vacancies for males in the Unarmed Branch and 248 vacancies for females in the Unarmed Branch.
For the Armed Branch, there are 319 vacancies exclusively for males, making the total number of vacancies 1131.

Posting is done in various police stations and administrative areas of the state.
Salary at WB Sub-Inspector Recruitment
The minimum monthly salary for the Sub-Inspector position starts from Rs 32,000.
WB Sub-Inspector Recruitment Process
For the recruitment of Sub-Inspectors (UB/AB) positions, several examinations are conducted.
Firstly, there will be a Preliminary Examination for 200 marks, where candidates who pass will undergo PMT and PET. Then, a written Main Examination will be held for 200 marks. Finally, a Personality Test for 30 marks will be conducted.
Afterwards, recruitment will be completed through verification rolls and medical tests.
Subject List for Preliminary Examination
The exam 200 marks will be held for a total duration of 90 minutes.
Subjects:
- General Studies: 100 marks (50 questions of 2 marks each)
- Logical and Analytical Reasoning: 50 marks (25 questions)
- Arithmetic: 50 marks (25 questions)
Note:
- Only those who pass the preliminary examination will be eligible for PMT and PET.
- There will be a negative marking of 0.25 for each wrong answer.
- The question paper will be in both Bengali and English.
- The marks of the preliminary examination will not be added to the final merit list.
Physical Measurement Test (PMT) and Physical Efficiency Test (PET)
First, those who pass the preliminary exam will be sent for PMT, and candidates who pass PMT will then undergo PET.
Candidates who pass both PMT and PET will be eligible to appear for the final main examination.
The Final Main Examination
The final main examination consists of 200 marks. It will be conducted through a descriptive method where there will be a total of three papers.
- First Paper – General Studies and Arithmetic (100 marks). This paper includes General Studies (50 marks), Logical Reasoning (25 marks), and Arithmetic (25 marks). (Time – 2 hours)
- Second Paper – English (50 marks). (1 hour)
- Third Paper – Bengali/Hindi/Urdu/Nepali (50 marks). (1 hour)
The Personality Test (30 marks)
Based on the results of the main examination, several candidates will be selected to appear for the Personality Test. The minimum passing marks for the Personality Test will be 8. If a candidate fails to achieve the minimum passing marks, they will be considered unsuccessful. The final selection will be based on the combined marks of the main examination and the Personality Test, and a cut-off will be published accordingly.

- General Studies: Candidates will be tested on various aspects.
- Logical and Analytical Reasoning.
- Arithmetic: Based on the level of the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education’s secondary examination.
Main Examination (Paper 2 and Paper 3)
Paper 2 – English
- Draft a report from point.
- Translation – English to Bengali / Hindi / Urdu or Nepali.
- Write a precis.
- Vocab, Synonym, Antonym, Common phrases, correction, Sentence improvement etc.
Paper 3 – Bengali / Hindi / Urdu / Nepali
Report writing and translation.
Application Timing for WB Sub-Inspector Recruitment
Application begins – March 9, 2024.
Application deadline – April 7, 2024 (by 11:59 pm).
Applicants are advised to quickly fill out their applications with their name properly documented to avoid potential server issues later.
Application Fee for WB Sub-Inspector Recruitment
All candidates (excluding SC and ST from West Bengal) will have to pay an examination fee of 250 rupees and a processing fee of 20 rupees, totaling 270 rupees.
SC and ST candidates (only from West Bengal) will have to pay only the processing fee of 20 rupees. No application fee will be required. In this case, SC and ST candidates must submit their own documents during the personal identity test.
How to apply for WB Sub-Inspector Recruitment
- First, the applicant needs to visit the websites of the West Bengal Police Recruitment Board (prb.wb.gov.in) or West Bengal Police (wbpolice.gov.in).
- Then, the applicant needs to provide their personal information such as name, identification card, address, date of birth, email ID, mobile number, etc.
- Next, the applicant needs to upload a new passport-sized photo (between 10 kb – 50 kb) and a full signature (between 5 kb – 20 kb).
- The background of the passport-sized photo should be white, and the applicant’s face should be clearly visible. Photos with covered faces or unclear images will not be accepted.
- After that, the applicant needs to make the payment (via debit card, credit card, net banking, or through the UPI app).
- Once all the steps are completed, the applicant should download and keep a copy of their application form.
Editing Window: Will be active from April 10, 2024, to April 16, 2024.
If there is any mistake in the application, an editing window will be provided.
To make any edits, the applicant needs to enter their mobile number and date of birth and make the necessary changes before submitting.
